Happy Anniversary Nyan Cat!! The Pop-Tart Cat that Farts Rainbows…
Yes, one year ago, a strange Pop-Tart wearing cat flew on (or fartin’ out) a rainbow and nyan’d its way into our hearts. Or rather, firmly planted that damn crack song into our brains where it has remained ever since. Happy anniversary, Nyan Cat!!
So to celebrate this very special day, we have dedicated a Nyan Cat post in honour of possibly the most annoying internet meme of all time.
For those of you who have been living in a cave for the past year, Nyan Cat – also known as Pop-Tart Cat – is an 8-bit animation of a cat that has a body of a cherry Pop Tart and rainbows coming out of its backside…
The internet meme was started way back in April of 2011 (ancient history in Internet time) by Chris Torres “PRguitarman”, the guy behind LOL-COMICS. He drew a funny picture of a cat with a Pop-Tart body and a rainbow coming out of its bottom – check out this exclusive interview of him via popgoestheweek.
Though the cat was born on April 2, 2011, it wasn’t released into the wild (YouTube), until April 5, 2011, when YouTube user Sarahj00n posted a video titled Nyan Cat using the combined 8-bit style animated gif with that ear hemorrhaging song by Japanese artist Daniwell-P looping in the background. The cat quickly gained a huge following and began clawing its way to dominate the Internet.
The said video can be viewed below:
However, not everyone is a huge fan of the rainbow-gassing kitty, as evidenced by the kids in this amusing FineBros video.
The majority of the reactions seem to be negative, but maybe the kids just aren’t giving Nyan Cat a fair chance. Maybe if they played the Nyan Cat: Lost in Space game they might develop some affection for the little cat – iPhone/iPad Version.
If you’re itching to pay homage to this great cat, the best way is to sneak over to your co-workers’ desks while they’re at lunch and use NyanCat to add some nyan to their home pages. They’ll thank you one day.
