EDM Twitter Storm at the AMAs 2012 – David Guetta sounds French?
It has only been a few days after the first EDM winner for the American Music Award (AMA) 2012 has been crowned, and he is already causing quite a stir within the EDM community for winning a prize he was not even there to accept.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, AMA’s inaugural winner for the “Electronic Dance Music” category (as Elisha Cuthbert kindly explained to us) is Mr David Guetta, beating out fellow nominees Calvin Harris and Skrillex (yes, there were only three of them) for the mini pyramid. But what happened after was even juicier.
Twitter-verse exploded in hashtags of congratulates, disappointment and discovery of how strangely French-sounding Guetta is. Our gleeful observers at Pigeons & Planes compiled some of the best for your viewing pleasure.
AMA may not be the highest of recognition outside of the circles of Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, but we do agree with Teresa R. for pointing out that Guetta was more well-known because he makes questionable singers less um, questionable (at least musically). Although Guetta won based on sales and popularity, and within a mainstream crowd at that, EDM now receives more airtime and recognition, and Guetta did dedicate his award to the other DJs and producers within the category.
Have a listen at Guetta’s award acceptance speech, live from Brazil.
